"So long...and thanks for all the fish (and rice)..."

well, tis now official. I'm leaving Japan. Found out officially yesterday that my company is closing down. Long long complicated story, and it's kinda been coming for a while, and for all those who knew of the seemingly never ending saga of 'we'll know today/tomorrow/next week/next month' etc... well, we know now. I'm staying in Japan to help with the closure and ths shipment of the whole factory back to the UK in a big box. I finish work mid march, and should be out of japan by the end of march.

I guess for anyone who knows me at all, you'll know how much i dearly love japan, niigata and all my friends and life here, and to be honest, im pretty gutted, well, very gutted to be honest, but theres nothing i can do about it...

Plans for the future?...none at the moment, although i have an iron in the fire somewhere else in asia that might come off, but we'll see... my only plan at the moment is to try and not have to move back to the uk...i just feel thats its not my time to do that yet...

Ive got a list of things that i want to do in japan before i leave, so i guess ill be spending the next 8 weeks trying to tick as many boxes as i possibly can...

So there you go, nothing more to say really, apart from...well.........bugger

Friday Night

Friday, myself, gareth, adam and hisa (adams girlfriend) decided to go out locally for dinner and a few drinks. there isnt much in the way of nightlife where we live, but there are a few restaurants and weve found a pretty nice bar nearby. we went for ramen for dinner, which is one of my favourite japanese dishes, its basically noodle soup with meat and stuff in it, really nice. well, after a few beers and a couple of shots of absynth, gareth and adam pursuaded me to go into town. we got a taxi in (i fell asleep...already!) and went for a few beers in the 'immigrants cafe' - the most popular ex pat bar in niigata, then onto Hotspot for a few beers, and nearly a disagreement with a couple of russians..there are quite a few russians in niigata, they come to niigata, buy cheap second hand cars and export them back to russia. anyway, after that we got a tthe axi to a club/bar called shame, which had about 3 people in it so we turned straight back around and left...at this point it was about 1am, so the only sensible thing to do was to go to karaoke of course...doing karaoke in japan is something you have to do here before you leave...its tradition. unlike in the uk, here, you have a separate room all to your group, so you dont have to sing in front of strangers. the places themselves look like dodgy hotels with people disappearing into small rooms...but great fun. the one we went to had the most bizarre eclectic mix of songs, really random bands/songs, but great ones. its amazing how you can like a band that no one has ever heard of and see their songs on the karaoke list... was such good fun. hisa is a great singer and sang loads of japanese songs...me, adam and gareth were awful...and i have to say, that i am catagorically the worst singer in the world, truly truly bad. i mean, you think you can sing, you put a cd on in the car and sing away, and you are the greatest singer in the world...but when its just you, and a mike and backing track, my god, thats a humbling experience! jeez, i used to sing in a band also...and you wonder why im an engineer! the funniest thing was trying to sing to Slipnot...who's idea was it to put slipnot on karaoke...?? well, me and gareth soon killed that one... we left around 4.30 and went to royal host. royal host is by the train station and is famous for late night revellers to get breakfast there and wait for the first train home in the morning, ours was 5am (which we missed as we fell asleep). royal host is like a late night kebab in the uk, but without the fights and the drunks. we eventually got the 6am train home and rolled into bed at 6.30am.

My Apartment in KL!

THIS WAS MY HOUSE!! the small block on the bottom left overlooking the pool. it was on top of a massive hill with a balcony overlooking kl... aaawwwwwww

Kuala Lumpur Telecoms Tower

2 very interesting facts about the telecoms tower, it:
a) has a restaurant in the top part, which actually revolves as you eat so you get a good view of the city (stunning stunning place...ate there twice)
b) is slightly shorter than the twin towers, but is on a hill, so is technically higher, this and the fact you can go all the way to the top makes it even better
c) (free additional fact)...i saw the Prodigy play at the base of the tower in 2005...amazing gig...watching the Prodigy and turning around to look up at this tower right next to you...amazing. (however, as i only ever wore sandals/flip flops in kl, (apart from work) i was in the mosh pit in flip flops, and nearly broke my foot...note to self, never wear flip flops in a mosh pit) i have a really funny story about a linkin park gig in kl in 2004...remind me one day to tell it

KL Twin Towers

3rd tallest building in the world, was the tallest when completed 5 years ago...ive been onto the bridge a third of the way up...and thats bloody high

Me Tube

fame at last...made it on to YouTube, its a montage from the football tournament in sept last year in the beautiful Negano about 2 hours drive from here...and of course, out of all 18 teams, we, the mighty mighty niigata came second, great memories. i appear after 45 seconds (briefly). for those who understand the finer points of football, you will notice the great ball control, the drop of the shoulder, the shimmy, and taking the ball past 2 people, for those filistines who know not of the beatiful game, you may see my movements as a panic and 'oh my god, theres two big buggers running straight towards me...'

Weekend

Japan is a truly great place, the politeness and respectfulness of the people is contageous. yesterday i came out of my apartment block and there was a family of about 7 outside, as usual, they all bowed and said konichiwa, apart from the youngest kid, who was about 7 years old, who looked at me shyly and embarrassed and said 'hello'...so i said hello back, at which point he beamed into a huge smile, and started jumping up and down excitedly as he'd spoken english to a geijin. i dunno, maybe im getting soppy, but these kind of things (which happen frequently) almost kinda make me feel fuzzy and warm inside...anyway...

decided on a snowboarding free weekend this weekend, usually i dont go out late the night before if im boarding, consequently, i havent been out into town for a while, and amazingly, we discovered that myself, adam, gareth and jo had actually all been out in town together as a four...ever!

friday, i went for dinner with my good good buddy J. havent seen her in about a month so had a lot to catch up on, and was a really nice evening (apart from the incredibly spicy 'normal' curry). had a good chat and i think she has helped me just about decide what im going to do with a few big decisions regarding my life etc...

saturday did nothing. having a run free weekend also, give my legs a bit of a rest. watched reservoir dogs on tv, and went for a drive along the coast road to see the sunset. strange weather at the moment, its mid jan, and should be freezing and 10 feet deep in snow...but saturday was sunny and i went out in a t shirt! so so mild here, not good for the snow thoughm some resorts not open yet. kinda wish id gone boarding as the blue skies would have been beautiful! not to worry

saturday night we went out, adam, garth jo and me. our japanese sensei also works as a waitress in a restaurant 10 mins outside town. we had no idea whether it was a noodle bar or a burger place or what, but we asked her to book us a table on our lesson last week. we got out of the taxi and 'whoa!' it was a beautiful place. very typical japanese restaurant. tatami mats, low tables, and each table is in its own separate room, with paper walls, amazingly gorgeous place. photos above. it was a tofu restaurant, which is kinda funny, tofu for first course, tofu for main and when she brought out our tofu desert...well...you can have too much tofu...

then we went into town, the usual haunts, immigrants cafe, Hotspoto (hotspot in japanese), then on to see my great mate deccy and a few other friends in Shame. by 4.30am i was falling asleep, and couldnt stay awake for the 5.30am first train home, so got a taxi on my own...apparently adam and garth rolled home at 8am this morning! i am such a lightweight! did have a slight scarey moment, i fell asleep in the taxi, and when the taxi driver woke me up and indicated that we were at my destination...i had no idea where we were, and no way of communicating with the driver. was a little panciky, waking up bemused and inhebriated somewhere that i didnt recognise! anyway, after driving around for a few mins i realised where we were and staggered to bed.

today has been a non event, watched tv all day (trainspotting was on tv) and eated home made (not by me) chocolate chip cookies/biscuits/cakes and drank coffee. so pretty relaxing and necessary weekend. we should (should) find out this week whats happening with us in japan, and if we have to move back to the uk soon, ie in a few weeks. just hope we find out something as i have an alternative offer that wants an answer imminently.

damn, getting sunday evening/pre work blues...

The Golden Piston Award

we have this thing at work, amongst the english guys, its called the Golden Piston Award...long story but the Golden Piston is awarded weekly to the english person in the office who does or says the dumbest thing that week. its always been a mythical award, but rich actually made a physical effigy of the the trophy today. now usually, its had been metaphorically awarded to gareth, who habitually does and says dumbass things, however, the inaugural trophy was actually 'won' by myself today. looking back its a tad embarrassing, but the background to it all is that there are a lot of americans and canadians in niigata, and american words are creeping into the english language with my english friends, ie 'store' instead of 'shop' etc... and its a bit of a bugbear for me, so i usually correct my english friends on the use of 'americanisms', the Golden Piston Award was given for saying the dumbest this week...imagine the screen going all wavy in a flashback kinda way back to 3pm today, the conversation went a little something like this...
Rich - "...yeah, ill put it on my resume' "
Me - " mate, stop using american!"
Rich - "resume' is french"
Me - "oh yeah, but you should use the english, Curriculum Vitae"
Rich - "but thats latin"
Me - "oh....."
i guess you needed to be there...

Definition of unlucky...

adam, on only his second snowboarding run of the entire season at ninox on saturday, caught and edge, ate snow, and in the process has broken his shoulder and is now out until spring. bummer.

Proof japanese drivers are bad...

ok ok, so proof that japanese drivers are bad. figures dating from 1980 to 2002 show that every year the most fatalities on the road were recorded in the US (over 42,000 deaths per year), followed every single year since 1980 by japan. in japan in 2002 over 9500 drivers died. japan has the tightest control on drink drivers, i.e. zero tolerance on alcohol, and some of the slowest speed limits in the world...if you average fatalities per head, then im sure japan has the most road fatalities in the world...go figure

WHY ARE JAPANESE DRIVERS SO BAD???!!!

the speed limits in japan are crazy. long country roads the limit os 50km/30mph. in villages its 40km/26mph, motorways are 80km per hour. BUT...BUT does that mean there are less accidents? oooooohhhh nnnooooo....they are crap! i have never seen as many accidents in all my life, seriously...awful. my favourite, is when they are at a junction and your driving...they'll wait....wait....wait (just when you think theyre waiting)...they pull out straight out in front of you! aarrgghh... statistically there are twice as many accidents per head as there is in the uk. now malaysian drivers are crazy reckless dangerous drivers...but predictably reckless, you know they are going to drive too fast and cut you up...you get used to it...but japanese...jesus, they are just...i hate to say...stupid drivers! unpredictably stupid. theyll drive in the outside lane of a 3 lane highway at half the speed limit, pull out with no notice, and all other sorts of idiocy....and so we come to today...im driving to work, in the middle of a village, on a straight road, in daylight, i stop behind 2 cars at a red light. all 3 of us sit there for a few minutes, not moving, after another few minutes....BANG! some daft bint has just driven straight into the back of me....how didnt she see me??? i havent moved in 5 minutes! 'christ' i thought. so i pull into the side, she just sits there, traffic backing up behind her. after a few mins, she pulls in. i get out and inspect my car, expecting the boot to be caved in, i mean, it was a hell of a whallop....amazingly, not a scratch on my car, seriously, not a scratch, no idea how. so she jsut sits there staring at me, eyeballing me no less! doesnt get out, doesnt move or anything. so im stood there thinking god, what is the protocol?? after a while of further token gesturing checking my car, i feel a little stupid just stood there, so i get in my car and drive off, i mean....she didnt even get out of her car! please please, anyone who has been to japan...please explain why japanese drivers are soooooo crap?? actually, many of them have tv's in the front of their dashboards, many just watch tv whilst driving...ive seen them! anyway, answers on a postcard.

Sunday

sunday i came home from pam and deccys and went for a run. as it was relatively a nice day i.e. above freezing. decided to do 21km (outdoor) as there is only 1 month until the tokyo marathon, and have only done 10km runs in the last month. anyway, felt pretty good after 10km, so decided to go further, ended up deciding to do 30km/18 miles. the last 7km was pretty gruesome but had to do it. was well happy actually, have managed to complete 3/4 distance, and its further than ive ever run before. and now...only now do i actually think that i can do the marathon. still got a long way to go, but am more confident now, was even thinking about pulling out this week. planning to do 40km next weekend. can hardly walk today though! in fact, the office is hilarious today. all the guys who went boarding for the first time at the weekend can hardly walk also! god knows what the japanese think we've been doing all weekend! went to adams last night with gareth and had a few beers and played ps3...

hmmm...

Saturday

Saturday a few of us went to Ninox. Ninox is about as local as a ski slope gets, its about 45 mins from my door, not the biggest resort, but pretty cool. A few work mates also came this time. Gareth, Adam, Hisa, Miyoko and Jo, which was nice. We had loads of fresh snow which was lovely. I even tried off piste stuff, which was 4 feet of virgin snow, managed to go about 30 yards before sinking! Also tried my first rail. Thanks to my mate Kat, who said it was 'easy', and then proceeded herself to fall off, i went for it. Boarding things like rails is all about conviction, you have to believe, you have to be assured in yourself and your abilities, you have to say to yourself 'yeah, i can do this, i am the daddy!'....unfortunately, the only things going through my mind was 'oh bloody hell, thats high...and narrow, looks painful, i cant to THAT!...no...no...no...arrgghh!' and true to my word, i totally fell off. not only that, but i landed plum on the rail arse first...actually really hurt, and still today (monday) cant sit down with my left arse cheek...seriously, i have to drive balancing on my right cheek...thanks Kat. After boarding i went to an onsen (hot natural spring water spa) in nearby murakami. the onsen was beautiful, there was an outdoor part which was just off the beach, so you lie there stark naked (separate mens and womens) in the hot water pool and watch the waves crash on the beach...which is snow covered...absolute heaven....i love onsens! sat night i stayed at my good good good friends pamela and deccy's apartment in murakami, watched zoolander and drank wine. perfect saturday.

Japanese Drinking Parties...and sayonara

Had another work drinking party tonight. tonights excuse was 'new year', but just another reason for them to get drunk. typically, all the japanese people that ive been battling and arguing with for the past few weeks, after a couple of beers, are all my best mates! actually kinda nice to clear the air. work is pretty stressful at the mo. well, basically, our company is up for sale, and IF we get bought, then 75% of us will be made redundant, think we find out next week. also, the due to the high costs in japan, the potential new buyer wants to pull out of japan, so , we could all be out of a job, or pulled back from japan in a few weeks. if we go, then the japanese company we are working with will go under, so tensions very high from both ends. the long and short of it is that i may have to leave this beautiful country very very soon, which will break my heart. no one knows whats going on, but we could be out of here in 6 weeks... so there you go...not good
