Niigata Earthquake

Woke up to the news that niigata (my old home in japan) had been hit by a severe earthquake this morning. Currently 4 people have died and 150+ injured. This is also the same day that japan got struck by a typhoon. I was watching cnn this morning, and they were running the story about the earthquake, then they said it was in niigata, my stomach just lurched. The last significatn one was one 2004 when 65 people died. One of the strangest things though was watching a global news programme from the uk, with american reporters, saying the word 'niigata', just seemed really bizarre to hear that name on tv.

have spoken to a couple of mates in niigata, and apparently it was pretty scary stuff. my favourite quote from a good irish friend of mine (which surprisingly the bbc didnt use) was "yeah im ok, but it scared the sh*t out of me at the time, i was in the shower when it happened and thought there was something wrong with the shower, til i realised what was happening'.
you dont actually realise how frightening earthquakes are until youve been in one, and ive never been in the the epicentre of one before, so goodness knows how it must have felt.

Been catching up on the news, it seems a lot worse than I thought. Apparently it was worse in Yoshida, but there has been no structural damage to the building and no one seems to know any one that got hurt. Lucky escape!
